Walgreens adopts call-ahead order pickup

Customers can buy a range of health, grocery and household products at the drive-thru.

Walgreens is now allowing customers to pre-order more items for pickup via its drive-thrus, Chain Store Age reports.

Customers can order from a list of health and wellness products and household essentials online ahead of their visit, then pay and pick up their order at more than 7,300 Walgreens drive-thru locations in the United States. Customers can check with their ZIP code to find the nearest participating Walgreens pharmacy.

During this current COVID-19 pandemic, we recognized the need for safe, alternative shopping options that promote social distancing,There are more than 100 products on the list for drive-thru pick-up, including cleaning supplies, over-the-counter medications, grocery items, infant formula, first aid and medical supplies. “During this current COVID-19 pandemic, we recognized the need for safe, alternative shopping options that promote social distancing,” said Richard Ashworth, president of Walgreens.

“As a result, we quickly developed and launched this newest digital service—ordering online and picking up at drive-thru—in a manner of just a few short weeks,” Ashworth said. “Walgreens customers and patients now can shop from the convenience of their own homes and pick up their purchases on their terms. This is another example of our ongoing commitment to adapt to and meet changing consumer behaviors during these challenging times.”

Last month, CVS Pharmacy announced a similar service to enable customers to add select health essentials to their prescription orders at the drugstore chain’s locations with drive thru windows.
