For the third year, Amy Parks-Heath Elementary partnered with the local organization, Mac & Cheese and Pancakes, for a school-wide food drive.

Mac & Cheese and Pancakes was created by Kaden Newton.  Kaden, who just happens to be a student at Celia Hays Elementary, has been a fan of the local food pantry since he was 4 years old. But, he noticed one little problem…they didn’t seem to have any “kid-food” that he liked. He decided to take matters into his own hands and created Mac & Cheese and Pancakes to benefit hungry children in Kaden’s community. Kaden asks for “kid-friendly and kid-approved” foods.

The whole school got involved and stepped up in a big way for the food drive.  The Amy Parks-Heath ES Student Council challenged the school with a goal of 2,000 food items which each grade competing to see who could bring in the most items.

The fourth-grade teachers challenged their students to find ways to earn money and buy food themselves this year.

“It is our hope that through this event they will see the power in doing for others and giving from the heart,” said fourth Grade teacher, Renee Clover.

A first-grade parent who owns his own business challenged his employees to donate, which brought in 490 cans of soup for the food drive.  The Student Council could be seen each morning helping students unload bags and boxes while getting them sorted into the correct piles.

“The Amy Parks-Heath Elementary students and families blew us away with their generosity and desire to give back to our community,” said Principal Megan Smith. “Thank you for helping us make our biggest contribution yet with over 2,700 food item which went directly to Helping Hands food pantry in Rockwall.”
