Air Force Staff Sergeant Gregory Walker, a cancer survivor and adaptive sports competitor, to receive new home in Monterra community

Fate, TX – April 2026 – Building Homes for Heroes, in partnership with David Weekley Homes and Monterra, a development of Wynne/Jackson, will break ground on a new mortgage-free home for U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Gregory Walker during a ceremony in Fate on Thursday, April 23, at 10 a.m.

Walker joined the U.S. Air Force in February 2008 in Jackson, Mississippi, motivated by a strong sense of duty and service to his country. During more than 12 years in the military, he completed three deployments to Afghanistan, where he experienced life-threatening conditions that resulted in both physical and psychological injuries.

After returning to the United States, Walker faced additional challenges. In 2018, after months of worsening pain and repeated medical visits, he was diagnosed with synovial sarcoma, a rare cancer found near large joints in the body. The diagnosis ultimately led to the amputation of his left leg below the knee. Following amputation and chemotherapy, Walker was medically retired from the Air Force in May 2020 and later received a 100% disability rating from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Despite those setbacks, Walker has continued to demonstrate remarkable resilience. He has become an active competitor in adaptive sports, participating in wheelchair rugby for Team Air Force at the Warrior Games and competing in rowing, wheelchair basketball, and track and field for Team USA at the Invictus Games. In September 2023, he earned a gold medal in indoor rowing at the Invictus Games in Düsseldorf, Germany. He now trains at the Adaptive Training Facility in Dallas with the goal of becoming a Paralympic athlete.

The new home in Monterra represents a collaborative effort to honor Walker’s service and support his future. Leaders from Building Homes for Heroes, David Weekley Homes and Wynne/Jackson, along with members of the Fate community, will join Walker for the groundbreaking ceremony as construction begins on the home he will one day receive mortgage-free.

“This project reflects the shared commitment of our partners and the local community to support a veteran whose perseverance continues to inspire others,” organizers said.

The home is part of Building Homes for Heroes’ ongoing mission to support veterans and first responders. As the nonprofit marks its 20th anniversary in 2026, it continues advancing its 50+500+5,000 campaign, which includes constructing, gifting and modifying a record 50 homes, reaching its milestone 500th home, and supporting more than 5,000 veterans, first responders and family members through its programs.
