Special Thanksgiving Edition
Civic Insights with David Billings
We have been discussing property tax relief and the associated challenges for local government. I have been asked to write a column on whether people truly want reduced government services, police, fire, EMS, roads, and more. I will tackle that issue in next week’s column as we ask the hard questions.
Today, I want to pause and reflect on grace and gratitude. Over the years, I’ve spent time traveling and hiking in some of the most beautiful national parks in our great nation. Here is what I have learned:
I have witnessed the impact of strong local government and the drastic consequences of poor governance. I have stood in awe of our national parks, watched moose grazing, encountered black bears, seen trout leap from high-altitude alpine lakes, and taken in breathtaking sunsets. Each moment has filled me with gratitude for the opportunity to experience some of God’s greatest gifts.
As I travel home, I am reminded of how grateful I am to live in Rockwall County. Too often, we forget the blessings that surround us: our outstanding school districts, our community of deep faith, and the incredible generosity of our local nonprofit organizations. They are called to do God’s work, neighbors helping neighbors, and we should be truly thankful for all they do.
Every good and perfect gift is from above. — James 1:17
Too many times, we get caught up in everyday challenges or the latest social media debates about one topic or another. We forget that we live in a truly great place and that we are called to treat each other as God commands.
This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. — Psalm 118:24
As we celebrate Thanksgiving, may we slow down long enough to recognize the blessings right in front of us. Let us be grateful for our families, our freedoms, and our community, a place where people still hold doors open, check on their neighbors, and work together to keep our cities strong. Gratitude reminds us that even in challenging times, God continues to pour out goodness on this county we call home.
A prayer for our county.
Fill our hearts with gratitude, remind us of Your faithfulness, and help us carry a spirit of thanksgiving into every season. May this county be marked by peace, grace, and joyful fellowship. Amen
