Becoming Who You Were Meant to Be (Before the World Told You Otherwise)

From the moment we’re born, we begin the process of absorbing the world around us—its stories, its rules, its expectations. We’re praised for behaving, rewarded for conforming, and taught, often subtly, that who we are isn’t as important as who others want us to be.

But there comes a point—sometimes gently, sometimes as a full-blown identity crisis—when you start to question it all.

What if who I am isn’t who I was told to be?

What if I’ve been living a version of myself that was shaped by fear, approval-seeking, or survival?

This is where the real journey begins—not of becoming someone new, but of returning to who you were all along.

The Layers That Hide You

Throughout life, we pick up layers. Expectations from family. Standards from culture. Narratives from teachers, bosses, or peers. These layers aren’t always bad—but when they start to weigh you down, or mute your voice, or disconnect you from your joy, they become the very things that block your growth.

You may feel:

  • Like you’re living someone else’s definition of success.
  • Confused about your purpose, even though on paper, life looks “fine.”
  • Tired from performing, proving, or trying to be palatable.

This dissonance is your soul tapping on the glass, saying, “There’s more to you than this.”

Remembering the Real You

Before the world gave you scripts, you had instincts.

Before you were trained to doubt yourself, you trusted your inner compass.

Before you learned to play small, you dreamed big.

Remembering isn’t about nostalgia—it’s about reconnection. Think back to the version of you who:

  • Got lost in creativity.
  • Spoke their mind freely.
  • Asked questions without shame.
  • Felt wonder about life instead of pressure to “have it all figured out.”

The real you isn’t lost. They’ve just been patiently waiting for permission to come forward again.

Signs You’re Ready to Come Home to Yourself

You don’t need to hit rock bottom to wake up. Sometimes it starts with a whisper:

  • A deep sigh when you close your laptop each day.
  • A flash of “This isn’t it” when you reach another milestone.
  • A longing for more depth in your relationships, your work, your life.

These signs aren’t failures. They’re signals.

You’re not broken—you’re being recalibrated.

You’re ready to come home to yourself when:

  • You’re more interested in meaning than performance.
  • You start choosing peace over perfection.
  • You crave authenticity more than approval.

Becoming Isn’t a One-Time Event

Let’s debunk the myth: becoming isn’t a single transformation—it’s an unfolding.

You’re not here to become something “better” because you’re not enough. You’re here to reveal the version of yourself that was buried beneath other people’s stories.

This process might involve:

  • Saying no to opportunities that no longer align—even if they look shiny.
  • Redefining success on your own terms.
  • Giving yourself grace as you unlearn old patterns.

Some days, becoming looks like breakthrough.

Other days, it’s crying in the car before you make a boundary stick.

All of it counts.

A Practice of Self-Return

You don’t need to know the end result. You just need to keep choosing you.

Start here:

  • Ask better questions. Instead of “What will they think?” ask “What do I think?”
  • Choose presence. You don’t have to figure out five years from now. What feels aligned today?
  • Speak kindly to yourself. Self-betrayal often sounds like your own inner critic. Learn to recognize and challenge that voice.
  • Create safe spaces. Surround yourself with people who celebrate your becoming—not those who fear your growth.

The World Doesn’t Need More Perfection

It needs more people willing to live from a place of truth.

Your story, your gifts, your voice—they matter. Not when they’re polished. Not when they’re “finished.” But now.

Becoming who you were meant to be isn’t about changing everything overnight.

It’s about remembering, reclaiming, and rising—one aligned choice at a time.
