Nico Patrick of Rockwall Recognized Among Future Leaders

AUSTIN, Tex. — The American Legion, Department of Texas, announced that Nico Patrick, a student at Rockwall High School, has graduated from the prestigious Texas Boys State program. Nico was among more than 1,100 high school juniors selected statewide for the intensive weeklong leadership seminar held at the University of Texas at Austin.

During the program, Nico was elected County Chief Justice for the Court of Appeals. In this role, he led several peers in reviewing legal cases and evaluating the constitutionality of rulings—a hands-on approach to understanding the judicial process.

Reflections from Nico’s Experience:

  • Expectations vs. Reality: He anticipated a resume booster or a typical camp, but quickly discovered it was rigorous and immersive, with “long hours and minimal sleep.”
  • Biggest Surprise: Nico formed deep friendships with peers in his assigned city and was inspired by their drive, which pushed him to be more engaged.
  • One Word to Describe Boys State: Perseverance—embodied through campaign losses, long meetings, and a shared commitment to see things through.
  • Leadership Lessons: Nico learned the importance of guiding while listening, advocating for others, and ensuring all voices are heard—true marks of a successful leader.

Since 1935, Texas Boys State has educated young men in citizenship, leadership, and civics through a “learn by doing” model. Delegates were nominated by their schools and local American Legion posts based on academic performance, character, and leadership potential.

Throughout the week, students ran for various elected offices, formed political parties, and engaged in debates and legislative simulations. Keynote speakers included Texas Railroad Commissioner Christi Craddick, retired U.S. Navy Vice Admiral Joe Maguire, and members of the Texas Legislature.

A highlight of the week was the June 11 parade from the UT Austin campus to the Texas State Capitol, where delegates toured the building and visited with their local representatives.
