Virginia Ruth (Schrand) Griffin passed away peacefully at home under the care of Faith Hospice on January 3, 2022 just short of her 90th birthday. She was deeply loved by her family, extended family, friends and neighbors and deeply loved them all back. She had a servant’s heart and was always willing to extend a smile, kind word or helping hand.
Born January 12, 1932 in Belleville, Illinois to John Schrand and Bernice Begemann Schrand, she attended Catholic grade schools and public High School and upon graduation entered the workforce.
She met Patrick Donald Griffin at Monsanto Company where they both worked, and was married to him on June 14, 1952. She then began her real life’s work of being the most amazing wife and mother a family could ever ask for. She stayed active in all of her children’s school activities as a band and sports Mom and Grandma. She was also dedicated to our Lord and his mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and remained active in many church activities. She was a proud member of the Catholic Council of Women, her Bible Study and the Quilting Ministry at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Rockwall. She was also a member of the Rockwall Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She loved the Dallas Cowboys and was proudly wearing her #4 Dak jersey during their last winning home game.
Virginia is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 66 years, Patrick Donald Griffin, a brother, Jack Schrand, and a granddaughter, Kate Cassidy Griffin. She is survived by her five children Kathie Westerman (Paul), Steve Griffin (Richard James), Elaine Nash (Tod), Matt Griffin (Cheryl), Patrick Griffin (Kristin), her twelve grandchildren Lindsey Thompson (Dave), Damian Westerman (Jennifer), Alysa Nash, Daniele Schwennesen (Josh), Jacob Griffin (Carly), Jennifer Klawa (Gabe), Caleb Nash (Natalie), Aaron Griffin, Corinne Nash, Micah Nash, Owen Griffin and Rider Griffin and her seven great- grandchildren Paul, Joe, Luke, Rowan, Evelyn, Wren and Oliver. She is also survived by one sister MaryBeth Rompel Schaltenbrand and two sister-in-laws Yvonne Bamert May and Paula Schrand, and a whole slew of nieces and nephews that she always held close to her heart.
The family would like to acknowledge the caring hands of Faith Presbyterian Hospice who helped make her last days comfortable and peaceful. Most importantly, the family wants to acknowledge the loving care and friendship of Carol Hudson who became much more to her and to us than a daytime caregiver. Carol was a companion, a friend, a sewing buddy, and a Days of Our Lives groupie with Mom. Her loving care and friendship helped make the last years of her life some of the best.
A visitation is to be held 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, January 14, 2022, with a rosary beginning at 7:00 PM in Reflections Chapel at Rest Haven Funeral Home – Rockwall location. A funeral mass will be held at 11:30 AM, on Saturday, January 15, 2022, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Rockwall, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Dell Children’s Hospital in memory of Kate Cassidy Griffin or to Faith Presbyterian Hospice in memory of Virginia Griffin.
