The big reveal is happening tonight. The City of Rockwall is the Free Live Music Capital of North Texas, and to commemorate the moniker, the City will install five guitars around town as public art pieces, all created by local artists. Over the past few months, the artists have been working diligently in their studios to create the masterpieces—and tonight at 7 p.m., the creations will be unveiled to the public.
Under the direction of the Rockwall Art Commission, five local artists, including Jake Bays, James Kuntz, Nancy Kuntz, Susie Varner, and Kenyon Bevan Walter each designed the guitars to reflect their own personal style. The project is the second for the Art in Public Places program, which is overseen by the Art Commission: Judge David Sweet, Doug Agee, Jane Braddock, Betty Hoaglund, Kathleen Morrow and City Art Liaison, Bethany Browning. Funding for the project is provided by proceeds approved in the 2012 Bond Election to be dedicated to public art.
The guitars will be placed at prominent locations around Rockwall: City Hall, San Jacinto Plaza, Cain’s Corner Park, Harry Myers Park and The Harbor. The reveal will take place next Thursday at the Concert by the Lake at The Harbor—so the public can see the art that will soon represent the City. The final stage is to create pedestals for each guitar, and the art is set to be installed by this fall.
The Concert by the Lake Series at the Harbor is a visitors must during the summer season. The live, outdoor concerts are set upon the backdrop of Lake Ray Hubbard and presented by the Rockwall Parks and Recreation Department. The concerts always have a stellar line-up of live, tribute and variety bands. The concerts take place at the Harbor Amphitheater on beautiful Lake Ray Hubbard (2074 Summer Lee Drive, Rockwall, TX 75032). Concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. and guests are invited to bring blankets and chairs to enjoy the live-music experience.
The Downtown Rockwall San Jacinto Plaza Music Series is a great way to spend your summer nights outdoors. Nestled in historic downtown Rockwall, the San Jacinto Plaza comes to life with live music Friday and Saturday evenings, May through September. Guests can listen to the good vibes from 6:30-9:00 PM. There are cafe style tables and chairs in addition to the built in wall seats that line the plaza. Bonus- guests can bring food, beverages, and their own chairs, or come early and enjoy one of Rockwall’s outstanding restaurants on the square.
Since 2017, Rockwall has been the “Official Free Live Music Capital of North Texas.” The announcement was made by State Representative Justin Holland on May 19, 2017 at the Founder’s Day Festival, hosted by the Rockwall Parks and Recreation Department which hosted a free, live concert by Cory Morrow and Pat Green. If you are looking for a superb way to spend a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday evening, then check up our line-up of free, live music at www.visitrockwall.com.
