Under a white tent in the growing Monterra community, local leaders, neighbors, and supporters gathered last Thursday for a meaningful milestone: the groundbreaking of a mortgage-free home for U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Gregory Walker.

The ceremony, marked by a ceremonial shovel turn and a bright blue ribbon cutting, celebrated not just the start of construction but the resilience and determination of a veteran whose story has inspired many.

Staff Sergeant Walker joined the Air Force in 2008, serving more than 12 years and completing three deployments to Afghanistan. His service came with lasting physical and psychological challenges, but an even greater battle awaited him after returning home.
In 2018, Walker was diagnosed with synovial sarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer. The diagnosis ultimately led to the amputation of his left leg below the knee and his medical retirement in 2020. Despite these challenges, Walker refused to be defined by them.
Today, he is a standout in the adaptive sports community. Representing Team Air Force and Team USA, Walker has competed in wheelchair rugby, basketball, track and field, and rowing. He earned a gold medal in indoor rowing at the 2023 Invictus Games in Düsseldorf, Germany, and continues training in Dallas with aspirations of becoming a Paralympic athlete.
“This project reflects the strength of a community coming together,” organizers shared during the event, highlighting the collaboration between Building Homes for Heroes, David Weekley Homes, Wynne/Jackson, and the City of Fate.
The home, located in Monterra, a master-planned community known for its Italian village-inspired design, will provide Walker with a place to call his own. The neighborhood features more than 600 home sites, resort-style amenities, a 10-acre lake with a boardwalk, and access to Rockwall ISD schools, with future expansion already underway.

Building Homes for Heroes, the nonprofit leading the effort, continues its mission of supporting veterans and first responders nationwide. As the organization approaches its 20th anniversary in 2026, it is working toward ambitious goals through its “50+500+5,000” campaign, aiming to construct and gift 50 homes this year, reach its 500th home milestone, and support more than 5,000 individuals through its programs.
For Walker, the home represents more than a structure, it’s a foundation for the next chapter.
As attendees applauded and cameras captured the moment, one thing was clear: this was more than a groundbreaking. It was a celebration of service, sacrifice, and a community rallying around one of its own.
