As runners across North Texas prepare for the inaugural McKinney Historic Half Presented by BMW on March 28, 2026, the event is already highlighting a powerful story of resilience and recovery.
Sixteen-year-old Zion of Frisco has been named the race’s first-ever Junior Race Director — a symbolic role that reflects both his personal comeback and the event’s focus on perseverance.

A competitive sprinter in the 100m and 200m events, Zion has long held ambitions of qualifying for state competition, earning a Division I scholarship, and eventually competing at the Olympic level. Those goals were temporarily sidelined after a serious injury required surgery and months of rehabilitation at Scottish Rite for Children.
Following an intensive recovery process, Zion returned to the track with renewed determination. His journey, supported by physicians and therapists at Scottish Rite’s Frisco campus, embodies the discipline and resilience many athletes must develop both on and off the field.
“It was a joy taking care of Zion,” said Dr. Philip L. Wilson, his pediatric orthopedic surgeon. “His motivation and effort throughout recovery inspired our entire surgical and therapy team.”

Supporting Pediatric Care Across North Texas
The McKinney Historic Half has named Scottish Rite for Children as its official charitable beneficiary. Proceeds from the race will support pediatric orthopedic and sports medicine care for families across Collin County and the greater Dallas-Fort Worth region — including many who seek specialized care outside their home communities.
Scottish Rite operates campuses in Dallas and Frisco and provides treatment regardless of a family’s ability to pay. The organization serves thousands of young patients each year, helping children regain mobility, confidence, and independence after injury or illness.
The McKinney race is organized by the team behind the BMW Dallas Marathon, which has donated nearly $5 million to Scottish Rite for Children since 1997.
A Regional Event for North Texas Runners
The March 28 event will feature a half marathon, 5K, and Kid’s 100-meter dash, showcasing McKinney’s historic downtown and park system. Organizers expect participation from runners across Collin, Dallas, and Rockwall counties.
For Zion, the race represents more than a starting line — it marks another step forward in a journey defined by hard work and faith in recovery.
Registration for the McKinney Historic Half Marathon, 5K, and Kid’s Dash is currently open at www.mckinneyhalf.com.
