The Hughes family of Rockwall, Texas, has turned their grief into a mission of joy, inspiring their community with an elaborate holiday light display and a commitment to giving back. Their story will take center stage in Season 12 of ABC’s The Great Christmas Light Fight, premiering Thursday, December 5, 2024.

The Hughes family’s light display, aptly named “Stay in the Light,” began in 2019, a year marked by the devastating loss of their son Nathaniel. “I wasn’t looking forward to Christmas at all,” shared Brenda Hughes. “My husband started decorating to cheer me up—it began with a swan and a pond. On nights I couldn’t sleep, the lights gave me peace.”

That first display not only brought comfort but also earned the Hughes family a win in the Shores Decorating Contest. Inspired by the community’s encouragement, they expanded their efforts the following year to include fundraising for Meals on Wheels.

Since then, their display has become a beacon of hope and generosity in Rockwall, raising $15,000 in 2023 for Meals on Wheels, as well as donations of toys for Dallas Children’s Hospital. “Giving back gives me purpose,” Brenda said. “It’s a way to honor Nathaniel, who was always so giving—even when all he had to give was the shoes off his feet.”

An Opportunity to Shine

The family’s passion for spreading joy earned them a coveted spot on The Great Christmas Light Fight. Their whimsical Candyland-themed display includes gingerbread houses, a meadow, a nativity scene, and thousands of sparkling lights. “The producers made us feel like family,” Brenda said. “This experience is something we will cherish forever.”

Every night, visitors are greeted by candy canes, festive costumes, and the warmth of a family dedicated to bringing joy to others.

How to Support “Stay in the Light”

The Hughes family continues to collect donations for their causes, including Meals on Wheels and Dallas Children’s Hospital. Visitors can contribute through checks made payable to Meals on Wheels, cash donations, or by bringing canned goods, blankets, non-skid socks, and toys.

As they gear up for the national spotlight, the Hughes family hopes their story will inspire others to find light in difficult times and spread kindness in their own communities.

Tune in to ABC on December 5 to see the Hughes family compete on The Great Christmas Light Fight and celebrate their incredible mission of joy and giving.
