Residents to request Southside Pool to be renamed after Ruby Dabney

The City of Rockwall currently owns and operates two public swimming pools. “Municipal
Pool”, located just east of the town square at Harry Myers Park and “Southside Pool”, located
just south of the Post Office at Gloria Williams Park.

For over twenty years, Southside Pool (which has historically served the close-knit surrounding
African American community) was managed by the late Rockwall native Mrs. Ruby Jewel
Dabney.

On Monday, her son Dwight Dabney will lead the surviving family and friends accompanied
with a petition of over 950 signatures from current and former Rockwall residents, to request the
City Council rename this pool in his mother’s honor.

If approved, Ruby Dabney will join Gloria Williams as the second public facility named after an
African American within the city.
