Prior to the Winter Break, students in PreK through 6th grade at Jones ES all received a book to add to their personal library at home. The titles were all high interest and included titles such as Narwhal and Jelly, Pig the Pug, I Survived, and Elephant and Piggie. Titles in Spanish were presented as well, for bilingual readers.

The fantastic sound of book carts filled the hallways throughout the day as Principal Twedell, Assistant Principal Sparks, Ms. Fox, Ms. DeLaGarza, and Ms. Rivera visited each class to gift the books to the students. They laid out books for the children to pick from to ensure that they received one that interested them.

This gifting paired with the book giveaway conducted at the beginning of the year to all students.

“Our goal is to help our students build their own library at home,” said Ms. Rivera, Jones ES counselor. “The teachers and staff at Jones know that reading and access to books is critical, especially at the elementary level when students build their reading skills.”

After the fall book giveaway, students’ interest in particular authors increased, and requests for more books from those authors went up in the library. We love seeing our students reading and hope they enjoy their new books.
