Thomas Milton Whatling, age 90, of Rockwall, Texas, passed away September 6, 2022. He was born in Des Moines, Iowa, on July 10, 1932, to Eunice Anna (Shawver) and Frederick T.H. Whatling. Tom met Alma Ackerman in 1954, and after a brief courtship, they were married. His early working years were spent at Tone Brothers Spices, followed by more than 30 years at SuperValu warehouse. Tom accepted Christ as his Savior at age seven. He went on to spend his life devoted to the Lord, reading and studying the Bible, and sharing his faith with others. He also served as a deacon for many years and, along with Alma, sang in the church choir. Tom had many interests, and early on this included rebuilding car engines-often in the driveway with his sons. He liked going to air shows or to a local airfield to watch WWII planes take off and land. His interests also included gospel and classical music, occasional fishing, and a fascination with trains. Tom may have been short in stature, but was head and shoulders above many others when it came to the personal qualities of patience, kindness, and devotion to others and to the Lord. He will be missed.
Tom is survived by his wife of 67 years, Alma Whatling, daughter Marla Phan and husband Hong, sons David Whatling and wife Darla, and Fred Whatling and wife Irene. He also has eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren, and a host of family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Interment will be held at a later date in Des Moines, Iowa. Memorials may be made to Fellowship Baptist Church in Des Moines.
