The Rockwall City Council recognized a major local milestone, honoring 30 years of the Rockwall School of Music by formally proclaiming June 9 as “Happy 30th Anniversary, Rockwall School of Music Day.” This proclamation highlights the institution’s longstanding effect on many musicians in the Rockwall area.
Owners Russ and Karen Porter opened the school in 1996, a time when Rockwall was experiencing the early stages of rural growth. Over the last 30 years, the school has evolved to become part of the heart of Rockwall County, fostering an inclusive and encouraging environment for all students of any age and experience with music. Students can learn to play the guitar, piano, drums, violin, viola, cello, bass and ukulele and enhance their vocal and musical theater skills.
Russ studied Church Music at Ouachita Baptist University where he met his wife Karen, who studied Music in Piano Performance. He later received his master’s degree at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Karen received her Master of Music Education at the University of North Texas.
In addition to being named the “Lakeside Living Best of Music Lessons” winner for 10 consecutive years, the school was honored with the prestigious Award of Excellence from the Music Academy Success Organization in 2025. They are one of 15 recipients of this award across the United States and Canada.
“What began as a dream to create a welcoming place where people of all ages could learn music has grown into a community of thousands of students and families whose lives have been enriched through music over the past three decades,” Russ said.
The proclamation acknowledges the school’s success in creating a consistent space for recitals, private instruction and a community of music. This impressive accomplishment of sustaining 30 years in the music teaching industry has affected many Rockwall citizens for generations and will continue for years to come.
Beyond music lessons, the school has been a major part of local events by providing students a chance to perform at public events. This helps students build confidence when it comes to performing an instrument or singing. This community connection has helped the school evolve from just a business to a pillar in the Rockwall community.
While the milestone marks a significant achievement for the school, the Porters express extreme gratitude for all of the students who have walked through their doors.
“This recognition belongs not only to us, but also to our incredible students, parents, teachers, staff, and community supporters,” Russ said. “Thank you for trusting us with your musical journeys and allowing us to be part of your lives.”
As the school looks to its fourth decade in the area, the proclamation by the City Council solidifies the school as a vital part of Rockwall. For the Porters, the day is less about the accolade and more about the thousands of students they have shaped since 1996.
