In an era of financial apps, constant notifications, and social media comparisons, money stress is more common than ever. Blake L. Gunderson—Rockwall native and Heath High School graduate—is seeing that anxiety firsthand as Managing Director at Northwestern Mutual – Rockwall/East Texas, and he’s on a mission to change that narrative.
“We see anxiety show up more and more,” Gunderson shared. “There are constant reminders of finances—email notifications, direct debits, bills—it all adds up. And for many, it’s overwhelming.”
Gunderson notes that many people are paralyzed by the sheer volume of financial advice online, often not tailored to their specific situation. “Analysis paralysis is real. That’s why personalized planning matters. We meet our clients where they’re at—it’s not about broad rules of thumb, it’s about building from their actual starting point.”
A major misconception Gunderson hopes to dispel? That you need a high net worth to begin planning. “Everyone has to start somewhere. Your income is important, but your expenses are even more important. If you can manage your expenses, there’s always a place to begin.”
The recent Northwestern Mutual Planning & Progress Study highlights this—nearly 70 percent of Americans say financial uncertainty has made them feel depressed or anxious. Gunderson is using both local insight and national data to inform his approach.
Encouragingly, he sees growing momentum as people become more intentional. “Social media has actually helped in some ways. People are seeing financial success stories and feeling motivated to take that first step. And with online scheduling, it’s easier than ever to get on our calendars.”
Budgeting, he says, is the cornerstone of gaining financial control. “If you don’t understand what’s coming in and going out, that unknown creates constant worry. Step one is basic budgeting—Finances 101.”
One recent client success story involved a young woman navigating divorce and a shift to a single income. “She felt like she was starting over,” Gunderson recalled. “But within 30 days, her awareness and confidence had grown significantly. Helping reduce the stress of her financial situation, especially while managing personal challenges, was incredibly rewarding.”
For those feeling overwhelmed, Gunderson’s advice is both practical and human: “Enjoy life today. Spend on things that bring you joy, but be intentional. A good plan helps you meet today’s needs while saving for the future. You don’t need to lose sleep over money.”
His message is clear—financial peace of mind is possible, and it starts with taking that first step. Gunderson and his team are committed to helping local families build clarity and confidence in their financial future, one conversation at a time.
