Rockwall County is home to many creative voices, and one of the newest among them is retired teacher-turned-author Diane Milkowski of Rowlett. In less than a year, Diane has brought two charming children’s books to life—both inspired by the furry companions she’s loved over the years.
Her first book, Angel with a Tail, was born from a quiet moment with her golden retriever, Sassy. “One day I looked into her warm brown eyes and said, ‘You’re an angel with a tail.’ I thought—hmm, that sounds like a book title.” That spark of inspiration became the heartwarming story of a golden retriever who returns from Heaven as a guardian angel to a young boy, offering protection and love throughout his life.
Her second book, The Adventures of Ringobingo, was inspired by her spunky cocker spaniel mix, Ringo. “He would do anything to get outside and go roaming,” Diane laughs. In this colorful tale, Ringo sets off on a neighborhood journey full of friendship and discovery—just like the real-life pup who inspired it.
A lifelong dog lover and educator, Diane’s creativity doesn’t stop at storytelling. She once taught French (and even trained her poodle in French commands), learned the language through music, and has even sold paintings as a pet artist. She’s a self-proclaimed jigsaw puzzle fanatic—with one rule: dogs only!
Diane has been married for 53 years, has one daughter, two grandsons, and a deep love for storytelling that connects children with the joy, humor, and unconditional love of dogs.

I am a retired teacher who never thought I’d be a writer. My experiences with dogs in general and golden retrievers in particular led me to create this story. It’s a sweet story of love and devotion of a golden retriever who becomes a guardian angel to a little boy. Anyone who loves a pet will love this story.
