Rockwall, TX – March 21, 2025 – The City of Rockwall is excited to announce the acquisition of land from the Canup Family, marking a significant milestone in preserving local history. This site holds great historical significance as the original location where the famed “Rock Wall” formation was first discovered while digging a well. The Canup Family descends from Terry Utley Wade, one of the three original men who discovered the wall, and the land has remained in their family ever since. At one point in time, a portion of this wall was excavated and put on display for visitors to see, it even featured an arched entrance. The wall was later covered by the family, leaving it underground once again.

Since the formation remains underground and is not currently visible, the City plans to work with experts to determine the condition of the wall and identify the best course of action to develop a display without causing damage. We hope to showcase the unique geological formation, allowing residents and visitors to experience it firsthand.
“We are thrilled to take this step toward preserving and sharing Rockwall’s namesake with the public,” said Mayor Johannesen. “This project will provide an opportunity for future generations to appreciate the mystery and history of our city’s origins.”
The City extends its deepest gratitude to the Canup Family, whose generosity and commitment to preserving Rockwall’s history made this acquisition possible. “We are excited for future generations to view the historic Rock Wall” said the Canup Family. The City appreciates the efforts of the Rockwall County Historic Commission, under the leadership of Mark Russo, and all those who contributed to making this vision a reality.

At this time, the property remains closed, and the City kindly asks residents to respect the area and refrain from entering the site. Additional details regarding plans and timelines will be shared as they become available.
