The Rockwall community is celebrating one of its own, as high school football standout Cooper played a pivotal role in the Native American All-Star game on January 7, 2025. Held at the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas—the world headquarters of the Dallas Cowboys—this prestigious opportunity highlighted Cooper’s athletic talent and showcased his Cherokee heritage.
A Lifetime on the Field
Cooper’s football journey began at just four years old. Over the years, he has honed his skills as a wide receiver, defensive back, and a reliable holder for his team’s kicker—a role he’s held since the 8th grade. His versatility and dedication to the sport have earned him widespread recognition among his peers and coaches.
A Season of Achievements
Cooper’s high school career has been marked by notable accomplishments. In 2022, he led his junior varsity team in interceptions. His junior year ended with Honorable Mention All-District Wide Receiver and Academic All-District honors. Cooper achieved even more as a senior, earning 2nd Team All-District Wide Receiver, Academic All-District, and Academic All-State recognition.
A Game to Remember
The Native American All-Star Football Game featured 60 top Native American high school players from across the United States, divided into two teams: Team “Ta’tanka” (Buffalo) and Team “Wa-Ya” (Wolf). On January 7th, Cooper’s talent was on full display as Team Wa-Ya secured a thrilling 37-34 victory in double overtime. Cooper played a crucial role, holding the game-winning field goal that clinched the victory. This moment was the perfect capstone to his high school football journey and a testament to his dedication and skill.
Adding to the game’s significance, Cooper’s second cousin, Deputy Chief of the Cherokee Nation, Bryan Warner, conducted the ceremonial coin toss, making the event even more memorable for the family.
A Once-in-a-Lifetime Opportunity
Cooper was one of just sixty Native American athletes selected nationwide, and he expressed his gratitude for the experience. “This is an incredible opportunity to play one last time with seniors from across the country. I’m especially honored to be one of seven athletes representing the Cherokee Nation,” Cooper shared.
The Game’s Mission and Impact
The Native American All-Star game was produced by the Native American Athletic Foundation (NAAF) in partnership with the National Football League (NFL) and Nike. In addition to the game, the athletes participated in a camp from January 4-6, where they received coaching from former NFL players and coaches, engaged in leadership workshops, and prepared for the all-star game. The event aimed to spotlight Native athletes and help them explore opportunities for higher education and athletics. Founded by former professional athletes, the foundation provides mentorship on wellness, leadership, scholarship, and teamwork.
Cultural Significance and Community Support
The event includes a fundraising and scholarship banquet featuring former Dallas Cowboy Raghib “Rocket” Ismail as the keynote speaker. Players were selected through a rigorous application process that considered their GPA, highlight reels, and positional preferences.
For Native American athletes, the game serves as a gateway to pursuing bigger dreams. “This event shows athletes that they can aim higher and play at the next level, even at D2 and D3 schools where scholarships are available for hardworking students,” Cooper noted.
Rockwall’s Pride
The Rockwall community has rallied behind Cooper, with family and friends attending the game to support him. Cooper’s story serves as an inspiration to other Native athletes, encouraging them to dream big and pursue their goals both on and off the field.
Looking Ahead
Cooper encourages other Native families in Rockwall County to explore opportunities through the Native American Athletic Foundation, which plans to expand its programs to include more sports, including female athletics. “The foundation is always looking for sponsors to support these events and student-athletes,” Cooper noted.
