Elsie Evelyn Mattson Holm, age 93, of Mesquite, TX, passed away June 23, 2022 in Richardson, TX. Elsie was born to Finnish immigrants Arthur and Selma Mattson in Butte, Montana on February 3, 1929. Her family moved to Rochester, WA when she was a baby so her dad could work on the family farm. Eventually, they moved to Port Angeles, WA where Elsie graduated high school.

Elsie attended USO dances at the nearby military base, but she never wanted to leave Port Angeles. Elsie met, fell in love with, and married a local boy – Henry “Harry” Holm on July 18, 1950. They had 3 children – Linda, Frank, and Carol. Her husband was in the lumber and plywood production business and relocated the family to Oregon, California, Virginia, Arkansas, and finally settled in Mississippi. Elsie lost her husband in 1983. Elsie became grandmother to Linda’s children – Jason and Kristen Valentine, Frank’s children – Jennifer, Lacie, and Laura Holm, and Carol’s children – Stephanie, Kevin, and Steven Christopher Taylor, as well as step grandmother to Jeff and Mark Valentine. Additionally, she has 4 great granddaughters, 2 great grandsons, and a great great grandson.

Elsie was a homemaker to her busy household. She spent most of her time cooking,
cleaning, sewing, and facilitating her family’s needs. She loved her family and
supported them fully in their successes and failures. She took care of her husband
and mother during their lengthy illnesses. She delivered meals to shut-ins for her church. She loved others and made friends wherever she lived. Elsie loved the Lord and taught her children to do the same. Sundays were filled with church, restaurants, and family time.

Elsie moved to Texas to be closer to family after the local plywood plant reopening for Hurricane Katrina enabled her to sell her small town Mississippi home. She quickly made the adjustment to the big city and wished she had moved sooner. She loved to shop and did so daily. She loved time spent with her family. She loved eating at the Black Eyed Pea where they knew her by name, knew what she would order, and had it cooking by the time she was seated. Elsie loved attending church at South Garland Baptist Church and her membership in the Friendship Sunday School class.

Elsie was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2013 having shown symptoms a
few years prior to the diagnosis. Family assisted her until she needed
full-time care at which point she moved to Christian Care in Mesquite, TX. Ultimately
she passed from complications from the disease. Alzheimer’s took her body but
never took her sweet disposition, for which her family is grateful.

Elsie is preceded in death by her husband Harry Holm, father Arthur Mattson, mother Selma Mattson, brother Robert Mattson, and nephew Ron Mattson.

Elsie is survived by her children, Linda Valentine of Columbia, MO, Frank Holm and
his wife Sandra of Childersburg, AL, and Carol Taylor and her husband Steve of Rowlett, TX, as well as her grandchildren (grand, great, and great great) from Missouri, Alabama, Mississippi, and Texas and 2 nephews and a niece from Utah, Montana, and Oregon.

Interment will be at Mount Angeles Memorial Park in Port Angeles, WA, where
she will be buried next to her husband.
