Highway 66 bridge to be renamed “Heroes Bridge”

During the last meeting, the Rowlett City Council unanimously passed a resolution supporting an effort to ascribe the name “Heroes Bridge” to the SH 66 bridge between Rowlett and Rockwall.

#WalkTheBridge, directed by Third Watch LE Motorcycle Club and supported by Rowlett’s Veterans Resource and Outreach Center (VROC), takes place on the 22nd of each month to bring attention to those 22 men and women in uniform, including first responders, who commit suicide each day. The walk also places a focus on bringing updated mental health programs to our first responder and military communities. At the end of last year, these groups began the Heroes Bridge effort and the campaign has garnered support from TxDOT, local Chambers of Commerce, state and local elected officials and many, many residents in our community. These groups are planning a renaming ceremony at 9am on September 26 at the bridge to officially unveil the name.

Several years ago, Jeffery Gray, a retired Marine and one of recognized Rowlett Vets, began walking the bridge every day to honor the men and women in uniform who had made the ultimate sacrifice. With TxDOT permission, he began hanging American and POW/MIA flags on the bridge throughout the year to bring further recognition to our military and first responder heroes!
