Governor Greg Abbott today called for the firing of a Wylie ISD teacher who assigned a lesson to students that featured a cartoon that appeared to compare police with the KKK and slave owners.
Abbott also asked the Texas Education Agency to investigate.
On Thursday, Wylie ISD posted with an apology to their Facebook page for the assignment that read in part: “We are sorry for any hurt that may have been caused through a social studies lesson that included political cartoons that reflected negatively on law enforcement. Wylie ISD values our school resource officers and all members of the law enforcement community.”
According to the post, 400 8th graders from Cooper Junior High were given the assignment that included the cartoon. The assignment has been canceled.
Wylie ISD says the political cartoons portrayed in this lesson were not part of the district’s curriculum resources or documents.
The district did not provide an explanation from the teacher on why the cartoon was included in the lesson.
The post containing the apology on the district’s social media page has since been deleted.
The district explained in a comment that the post was deleted due to a number of comments that included hate speech and imagery that violated the district’s terms of use policy.
